Waterloo supplies energy efficient air distribution for unique domed leisure centre
Scunthorpe’s new award winning leisure centre is benefiting from excellent thermal distribution thanks to air distribution products supplied by Waterloo Air Products.
The stunning £21m eco-friendly leisure centre, known as ‘The Pods’ replaces a 1980s facility and is part of a major regeneration project for Scunthorpe which has also included a refurbished and improved central park with an amphitheatre; children’s play area and cafe to provide a focal point for recreation, sport and leisure.
Built by main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland, the Pods are constructed from glass and steel using an unusual design that features five intersecting geodesic domes covered in natural materials. The complex is enclosed by a lagoon and swale. Facilities include an eight-lane 25metre swimming pool, training pool, 85 station split level fitness suite, six court sports hall, cafe and crèche.
“The Pods is most definitely unique in its design, being the only leisure centre of its kind in the country to be built in such a way,” comments. Cllr John Briggs, deputy leader of North Lincolnshire Council.
Andrew Wright Associates were behind the concept design of the complex, which was taken forward by S&P Architects. Energy efficiency under-pins the design, this includes the use of intelligent lighting systems and natural ventilation. Extensive use of air distribution devices minimises the environmental impact.
An innovative water strategy uses run-off and grey water while the lagoon provides a top-up water supply for the irrigation of the grass roof and evaporative cooling. A bio-mass boiler fuelled by sustainably sourced wood pellets provides the centre’s heating and cooling needs.
Waterloo’s Aircell Polymer Grilles and Aluminium Louvred Faced Diffusers were specified throughout to deliver a well-designed air distribution system that combined the needs for aesthetic requirements with energy efficient air movement. Waterloo’s Aircell range are moulded in easy to clean engineering polymer and are available ‘off-the-shelf’ with five sizes available ranging from 150×150 up to 300×300.
The Aluminium Louvred Faced Diffusers provide an efficient and predictable air diffusion pattern. They are constructed from aluminium alloy extrusions with mitred and welded cleat, frames and suitable for numerous of projects where high quality diffusers for integration with a variety of ceiling types are required
Just three months after opening, the Pods, built by Bowmer & Kirkland was voted the most sustainable building/development of the year at the Property Industry Awards Yorkshire and Buro Happold won the Yorkshire branch of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Structural Engineering Excellence Award 2011 for their work on the Pods due to the five domes that make up the facility. The Pods has been rated “Excellent” by the BREEAM environmental assessment system for buildings.
